Dog Beds Online
Look around online and you’ll see all kinds of interesting dog beds.
Some look like sofas. Mommy and Daddy bought us our own used leather sofa for £35.00. They found it on Gumtree. They also bought us some used pillows from a yard sale. We like snoozing on it during the day!
Some dog beds look like caves. I (Tilly) like the idea of curling up in a warm cave in the winter. I am going to ask Santa for a cave bed next Christmas!
Dog Beds in Pet Stores
Most large pet stores offer a variety of dog beds. They range in size and thickness. Some are water-resistant (not waterproof) and some have zips so you can wash the cover. Mommy says the outer cover isn’t the only problem. She says the inside also gets stinky and needs to be washed, but most dog bed stuffings do not laundry well and end up lumpy or falling apart all over the inside of the washer. Some materials, like foam cannot be washed at all.
Our Inexpensive Dog Beds
Tilly: My dog bed is neat. It is a duvet like you see on human beds. The cover is made from a used sheet. I used to have Winnie the Pooh sheets! Kids sheets look really cute! It is cut to size and sewn into a duvet that is just the right size for me. It is complete with button holes and the inside is made from part of an old comforter (you can make quite a few dog beds from one used comforter). Most charity/thrift stores will sell old comforters. You don’t have to worry about how nice they look. You probably want to avoid feather, just in case your dog likes to chew!
Sometimes, when my comforter is drying, Mommy will fill the duvet with a couple of old pillows. The nice thing is that Mommy can wash both the cover and the comforter or pillows in her washing machine so that they come up clean.
Oscar: My dog bed is very comfortable. Mommy and Daddy bought me a used waterproof baby mattress for £5.00 from The Lions Club where they sell used furniture, etc. to raise money to help the community. You can also look for a waterproof baby mattress at your local charity shops, or resales shops where they sell used baby goods. You can check on ebay or Craigslist or if you’re in the UK, you can check out Gumtree. Finally, you can also look at websites where people give free things away, like Freecycle.
Each night, Mommy puts a warm throw on it so that it is comfortable. I’m nearly 12 so I get more aches than Tilly and it really helps me to sleep like a baby! 🙂 Mommy likes it because she can laundry my throws and then use a natural spray cleanser like Method multi-surface cleaner (plant-based) to wipe down the mattress if it gets dirty.
So, as you can see, it doesn’t need to cost much to provide a clean and comfortable bed for your best friends!
